Tacombi has announced their partnership with the first-ever Michelin-starred taquería, El Califa de Leon from Mexico City. Together Tacombi and El Califa de León will offer the opportunity to taste the flavors from the taquería’s menu for a limited time. Open since 1968, the family-owned El Califa de León is the very first Michelin-starred taqueria in the world, receiving one star when the guide announced its inaugural Mexico rankings with just 4 menu items. Beginning on November 13, the collaboration will kick-off at Tacombi’s Wicker Park location at 1442 N Milwaukee Ave, with a one-night-only pop up featuring all four of El Califa de Leon’s tacos served in the taco stand experience. After the launch event, a selection of El Califa’s tacos can be found at both Tacombi Wicker Park and Tacombi Fulton Market from November 14 - November 28.
During a trip to Mexico City and over many rounds of tacos, El Califa de Leon Owner Mario Hernandez Alonso and Tacombi Founder Dario Wolos dreamed up the idea of collaborating. It will be the first time these Michelin-starred tacos come to the U.S.
“We are honored to partner with El Califa de Leon and share their tradition with our guests across Tacombi,” says Founder Dario Wolos.
During the kick-off pop-up on November 13, the first-come, first-serve customers will get to experience the four tacos from El Califa de Leon’s menu – the Bisteck, Costilla, Gaonera and Chuleta – plus their two salsas, created and served by Mario himself. Tacombi has partnered with Pat LaFrieda to provide select cuts of meat. There will be fresh tortillas made on-site, provided by Tacombi’s proprietary brand of tortillas, Vista Hermosa.
Following the pop-up, running from November 14 - November 28, guests will have the opportunity to choose from a limited-time selection of tacos from El Califa de Leon at Tacombi’s Wicker Park location for two weeks.
