Managing Partners behind The Press Room, Jeff Williams and Paul Mena have announced that their newest concept is set to open this fall in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood at 1329 W Chicago Ave. Inspired by the atmosphere of night markets and street food in Southeast Asia, Jook Sing will offer a culinary experience that celebrates the region's flavors, tastes, and textures.
Guests will journey throughout several countries, indulging in a menu that blends different cultural influences. Like night markets, the restaurant's to-go style food is served in boxes that allow patrons to eat their meals at tables or take them to go.
Born and raised in Singapore, Chef & Managing Partner Christian Sia's culinary journey began in establishments in Singapore and Chicago. His passion for food and cultural fusion has led him to embark on a new venture - Jook Sing. This restaurant will combine Asian-American food favorites with Southeast Asian flavors and dishes.
Joining forces with Chef Christian Sia is his partner, Michael McCants who was born and raised in NYC. As the son of a Jamaican immigrant mother, his multicultural heritage has influenced his approach to cuisine.
"As a kid, I was a second-generation immigrant, and most of my friends were too. I loved going to parties at their homes because it allowed me to experience diverse cultures, savor different foods, and hear different languages. Despite being in America, traditions and celebration styles would vary based on our origins. Whether it was a Quinceañera, a Bar Mitzvah, or the Lunar New Year, that joyful and familiar vibe, infused with a unique energy, is exactly what Jook Sing embodies." - Chef Mike McCants, Chef Partner at Jook Sing.
On the menu, guests can expect dishes such as Jook Sing Internet, a twist on the Indonesian Warkops classic, featuring Indomie, Telor (Egg), Kornet (corned beef), gai lan, napa cabbage, housemade sambal, and a variety of Asian herbs. Other dishes include Jook Sing Roti John, Singapore's take on savory French toast, where a toasted baguette is pressed onto an egg omelet. The Jook Sing version is adorned with napa cabbage, Asian-style pickles, sweet chili sauce, and citrus kosho aioli. The Jook Sing Fried Rice is inspired by the Malay version of Nasi Goreng, popularized in countries like Singapore, Indonesia & Malaysia. Rice is fried with eggs, scallions, various seasonal Asian vegetables, sweet soy sauce, hoover sauce & sambal, topped with a fried egg, fried allium & Asian herbs.
Chef Christian Sia explains, "We aim to create a harmonious blend of cultures, embracing the spirit of shared dining as guests embark on a gastronomic adventure, savoring diverse dishes that come together to create an unforgettable experience."
Bar Manager Josue Mancero has crafted the bar program. Guests can expect riffs on classics, original herbal concoctions, fresh ingredients, and colors that complement the restaurant's atmosphere. From tropical drinks to mocktails, Thai Tea, Vietnamese Coffee, sake, and wine by the glass.
