Last June, Recess debuted their patio at 14,000-square-feet. During the winter, fire pits and heaters allowed for outdoor dining far beyond patio season, including themed pop-ups offering s’mores and more seasonal offerings.

This summer, the patio at Recess is becoming even bigger. Located at the corner of Kinzie and Green Streets (838 W. Kinzie) in the West Loop, the multi-level outdoor space is comprised of more than thirty shipping containers, more of which now allow for seating inside. The “windows” cut into the sides offer more covered second-floor seating. Additional tables and Adirondack chairs have been added to the rooftop awning overhanging from the main historic building. In total, Recess will now offer over 525 seats outdoors, plus another 259 seats indoors.

Recess offers a wide selection of craft cocktails, beer and wine, plus signature large-format “Water Cooler” drinks are offered tableside. Recess offers two frozen cocktails including Cold Hard Facts, made with Stolen whiskey, black tea and lemon, and a new Aperol Freeze, a frozen take on the Aperol Spritz.

The menu from Chef Amanda Salas features seasonal comfort food, including new additions: Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese topped with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and KBBQ Steak & Frites. On weekends, brunch offers bottomless Bleeding Heart Mimosas, a killer Bipartisan Bloody Mary and fare such as Strawberry Cheesecake French Toast and Biscuits & Gravy. Additionally, Recess partnered with local Chicago establishment, Bob's Pizza—transforming one of the shipping containers to the pizzeria's fourth outpost—who offering pizza late-night until midnight weekdays and 12:30am weekends.

Starting Memorial Day weekend, Recess is open seven days a week again, opening at 4 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
