Prairie Grass Cafe (601 Skokie Blvd., Northbrook IL) once again is offering special sensory-friendly dining hours, monthly on Saturday, October 28, November 25, and December 30. This hour & a half will provide an inclusive atmosphere for individuals of all ages and abilities to partake in a crowd-free dining experience with limited people and contact. The sensory-friendly hour creates an environment for people with autism, sensory input disorders, sensory sensitivities, and other physical, cognitive, or developmental disabilities, and their families, friends, and caretakers.
“Our first sensory hour held this past August was well received and guests have expressed interest in our offering it more often. Starting in October, we’ve added Sensory Hour on the last Saturday of the month, scheduled through December.
"At Prairie Grass Cafe, we want to give neurodiverse restaurant patrons a positive dining experience in a welcoming environment. Patrons can bring fidget objects, noise-reducing headphones, and other sensory tools or devices. Noise will be limited and lights will be dimmed. Our staff will be coached to provide efficient service with minimal contact but always available if you need extra assistance,” said Sarah Stegner, co-owner/co-chef of Prairie Grass Cafe.
Chef Sarah designed a special limited menu that eliminates long wait times. At 5 p.m., the servers will provide all customers with their checks and alert them that the restaurant opens for regular business at 5:15 p.m. as guests will begin arriving, lights will be turned up, and the music will go on.
