In response to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the hospitality industry, Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits of Illinois has announced that they are sponsoring several outdoor dining areas throughout Chicago, helping provide outdoor space to numerous bars and restaurant. Through Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot’s “Make Way for People” outdoor dining program, SGWS-IL is partnering with local chambers of commerce and neighborhood associations to sponsor outdoor dining areas in Chatham, Fulton Market, Little Italy, Lakeview East, Lincoln Park and the West Loop.

“It was difficult to witness the far-reaching impact of COVID-19’s devastation to the Illinois marketplace, especially to the On-Premise channel,” stated Terry Brick, Executive Vice President & General Manager for Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits of Illinois.  “We at SGWS-IL immediately began developing programs and processes to ease some of the burden our loyal customers were facing.  As the hospitality industry continues to struggle with the ramifications of this pandemic, we are happy to partner with the Illinois Restaurant Association to provide some relief.”

“Southern Glazer’s is a true advocate for the restaurant community. Before I can reach out, they are already on the phone, asking what their team can do to pitch in,” said Sam Toia, President and CEO of the Illinois Restaurant Association. “It is just in their team's culture, this driving desire to help. We are grateful for their partnership as we maintain Chicago’s prominence as a culinary epicenter."

“The philanthropic spirit of our private sector is paramount to Chicago’s strength,” said Samir Mayekar, City of Chicago Deputy Mayor for Economic and Neighborhood Development. “Thanks to the support from Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, these local chambers of commerce will have the financial resources to Make Way for People in outdoor dining without having to pass additional hardship onto small businesses in the community.”

Under Mayor Lightfoot’s program SGWS-IL has partnered with local chambers of commerce and neighborhood associations to create new opportunities for bars and restaurants in six neighborhoods. This program has allowed establishments in these communities to expand their service area into closed streets or other public locations.

“Southern Glazer’s sponsorship was critical for the West Central Association Chamber of Commerce (WCA) to close streets and expand outdoor dining for the restaurants in the West Loop and Little Italy communities.  Providing additional outdoor seating has given our restaurants a much-needed lifeline during these challenging times and some have even experienced better revenue numbers compared to same time in 2019,” said Rod Burch, WCA’s executive director.
