After a year of searching for a new restaurant home, husband and wife team Robert and Dana Garvey are reopening Robert’s Pizza and Dough Company in Streeterville. Located at 465 N. McClurg Ct off the Riverwalk, Robert’s Pizza will continue the pair’s commitment to contribute to the pizza landscape of Chicago and showcase their ‘Za Dough’– a 20-year-in-the-making, family dough recipe by Garvey himself. To celebrate its return, Robert’s Pizza will be giving away one free slice of pizza per guest from the to-go counter between 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 17.
“The Streeterville neighborhood is our home and where we launched our pizza journey,” says Garvey. “It was important for us to find a location that would allow us to grow operationally, while still serving our community. We’re thrilled to be bringing back our pizza and can’t wait for Chicago to try our new menu items and experience our new, expanded location.”
Robert’s Pizza will continue to offer its rotating lineup of up to 15 gourmet brick-oven pizzas, “create-your-own” pizzas with toppings from select premium ingredients and the signature Robert’s Pizza Flight. Pizzas returning to the menu will include The Lia, Peking Duck, Huevos Rancheros, Prosciutto and Arugula and the nightly special Seafood pizza. Along with the new restaurant, Robert’s Pizza will debut several new pies:
Duck Prosciutto: Calabrian chile, fresh mozzarella, and tomato sauce
The Funghi: wild mushrooms, thyme, driftless cheese
Finocchio: braised fennel, fennel fronds, fennel sausage and pollen, fresh mozzarella, and honey
The Jay: housemade fennel sausage, calabrian peppers, fresh mozzarella, and tomato sauce
Robert’s Pizza will also introduce new salad and vegan options with plans to roll out brunch and lunch menus in the coming months.
To accompany the thin crust pies, Robert’s Pizza will have a selection of local craft bottle and tap beers, a specialty cocktail menu and variety of wines including selections designed by Robert’s family in Piemonte, Italy. The wine and craft beer menus have been chosen to pair with the pizzas and will frequently rotate to complement the seasonal offerings.
Designed by Studio K, Robert’s Pizza’s new location is inspired by Dana’s 1,000 polaroid photo journal “Free Ranger”, which documents a long, winding cross country road trip taken by the Garvey’s in 1997. This “journey” is the connecting theme between the design elements, which feature a palette of slate blue and green banquettes, cognac leather chairs and rustic mango wood tables offset by contemporary orange accents. Worn and weathered materials such as old brick, layers of vintage patina and Corten are warmed up with candid, personal moments from the “Free Ranger” journal, which have been printed on metal mesh screens and help divide the rooms. From the vintage host stand visitors first see entering the space to the main bar inspired by a weathered toolbox, or the private dining space surrounded in rust patinaed metal doors, the design is all about eating pizza.
“To us, eating a slice of pizza is a journey,” says Garvey. “With each bite, as with each mile, something different is discovered. The new space gave us an opportunity to build a restaurant from scratch. It’s spacious. It’s cozy. We have an excellent bar and plenty of seating options for small gatherings both in and outside.”
Robert’s Pizza will be open for dinner Sunday – Thursday from 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. and until 11 p.m. for Friday and Saturday dinner service.
