Stefani Restaurant Group will reopen the steakhouse and bar Tavern on Rush on September 30, continuing its 25-year history in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood. The restaurant will now occupy the ground and second floors of the Thompson Chicago at 1015 N. Rush Street, a short distance from its previous location.
The redesigned space spans 16,000 square feet across two levels, featuring a main dining room, cocktail lounge, bar, outdoor patio, and multiple private event areas. The interior will incorporate updated design elements, including red accents, custom millwork, and imported tile, while also honoring the original location with vintage photos and a refurbished Tavern on Rush sign.
Owner Phil Stefani noted that the reopening aims to maintain the restaurant’s longstanding connection to the community.
Under the leadership of Executive Chef Michael ‘Wally’ Wallach, Tavern on Rush will offer an enhanced menu, beginning with dinner service. The menu will include USDA prime steaks, fresh seafood, and house-made pasta dishes. Breakfast, lunch, and brunch offerings will be introduced in the weeks following the opening. The beverage program will feature a selection of cocktails and a curated wine list.
The revival will also bring back elements from the former Tavern on Rush, including Ladies Night on Mondays, set to begin this fall. Benny Nadzaku, a long-time maître d’ who has been with the Stefani Restaurant Group for over 40 years, will rejoin the team. The original Tavern on Rush closed in summer 2022 after the decision was made not to renew the lease by the former landlords.
