Each year in the U.S. there are an estimated 15,780 children between the ages of birth and 19 years who are diagnosed with cancer. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is working to reduce that rate, and RA Sushi restaurants nationwide are supporting their battle with a new year-round fundraising initiative.
For 13 years, RA Sushi celebrated Nicky’s Week, raising nearly $2 million for St. Jude. Now, the nation’s only coast-to-coast sushi restaurant brand is extending its St. Jude fundraiser to a year-long initiative called RA’ckin’ for Nicky.
The St. Jude menu items will feature a new Mango Shrimp Roll, and guest favorites “RA”ckin’ Shrimp Tacos and Coconut Crème Brulee. Two dollars from each item ordered will go directly to St. Jude’s lifesaving work.
“Food is a great way to bring people together,” said Derek Franks, vice president of operations at RA Sushi. “We’re looking forward to once again hosting friends, families and co-workers around our tables to help generate much-needed funds for St. Jude children and their families – giving them comfort and hope as they fight against cancer.”
Thanks to partnerships like this one, treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened more than 50 years ago. Funds raised through efforts like RA Sushi’s RA’ckin’ for Nicky help ensure families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because St. Jude believes all a family should worry about is helping their child live.
The RA Sushi fundraiser honors the life of Nicholas Mailliard, who lost his battle with pediatric cancer in 2005 at the age of 13. Nicky was the nephew of Rich Howland, one of RA Sushi’s founders. His battle with cancer deeply impacted the RA Sushi family and inspired the restaurant’s support of St. Jude. RA Sushi has contributed nearly $2 million to St. Jude over the past 14 years.
