Chicago cupcake maker, Molly’s Cupcakes, is expanding once again. This time with a new shop in South Loop at 1150 S. Wabash Avenue - located around the corner from the Roosevelt CTA station.
The South Loop neighborhood is an ideal location for Molly's Cupcakes,” said owner Dori Isufi. “Since the beginning, we have always looked to be near families, schools, and universities as a nod to our founder's love of his third grade teacher's cupcakes. We look forward to continuing this tradition by providing our South Loop neighbors joy through cupcakes.”
Grand Opening: October 4, 2019
To celebrate the grand opening, Molly’s Cupcakes has created an itinerary for visitors. On Friday, October 4th 2019, from 8am-10pm, guests will have the chance to enter several contests. One special guest the opportunity to win one free cupcake every week for a year (restrictions apply)! The team will also award Molly’s t-shirts for guests who take the award-winning Instagram photos (tag @MollysCupcakes_SouthLoop). From 8am-2pm, mini cupcakes and La Colombe coffee will be given out to all visitors.
The Menu
Molly’s menu features a mix of cupcakes and treats and is known in particular for their Center-Filled Cupcakes. Popular flavors include: Peach Cobbler, Cake Batter, Crème Brule, Cookie Monster, Blueberry Cheesecake, and many more flavors! Guests can also choose to create their own cupcakes. They choose their desired cake flavor, frosting, and top the cupcake with as many sprinkles as they want in the traditional “sprinkle bar”.
Every month Molly’s has at least one new cupcake that follows seasonal trends. Starting in October, customers can try Pumpkin Spice Cupcake, which is a spiced cake filled with a sweet, creamy pumpkin filling, and topped with a cream cheese frosting. October will also see the release of a customer favorite - an Apple Pie Cupcake, a spiced cake filled with apple pie filling, topped with buttercream and a mini pie crust.
In addition to cupcakes, Molly’s offers cookies, Krispy-treats, brownies, pies, cheesecakes, and other daily treats. All items are baked daily in small batches and from scratch. This ensures the freshest product for all guests.
To round out the Molly’s experience customers can purchase house drinks, including La Colombe espresso drinks and coffee, house brewed lemonade, and a variety of teas.
The Design
Each of Molly’s locations celebrates the neighborhood they are located in by embracing the architecture of the area. The South Loop location is no different with 19’ ceilings, exposed brick, floor to ceiling windows, and a loft-like feel. The décor, all hand-picked by owner Dori Isufi, integrates the origin of Molly’s Cupcakes. Dori wanted to make sure that the moment customers stepped in, they were taken back to a classroom environment. She achieved that look by installing lockers, displaying lunchboxes, and adding a vast chalkboard mural that show all the “formulas” behind the cupcakes.
With 34 seats total, guests can choose from a variety of seating options. A long communal table with vintage school chairs invites guests to linger and mingle over coffee and cupcakes. Reclaimed school desks provide cozy seating for two. Swing seats along the front window, a Molly’s Cupcakes signature design, add a touch of whimsy. Highchairs and booster seats are available for little ones. In the Spring of 2020, guests can enjoy cupcakes in a dog-friendly patio seating.
The Story
Founder John Nicolaides: “Molly was my third-grade teacher. Whenever one of us had a birthday, she would bake us cupcakes. I still remember how good they were. She had her own special recipe for chocolate and vanilla. Just about everyone who tries them thinks they're the best cupcakes ever.”
