Kikwetu, a Chicago-based, family-run coffee company that sources its beans directly from small-scale coffee farmers in Kenya, has announced it will celebrate the brand’s 10th anniversary with a new weekly pop-up at the Silver Room and a new subscription service.
“My wife Martha and I founded Kikwetu a decade ago with a mission to build a bridge between Kenya, where we were born and raised, and Chicago, where we have made our lives,” said co-founder Leecox Omollo. “Coffee is more than just a drink to wake you up in the morning. It is a unifying force that fosters connection and community. Cafes and coffee shops are gathering places in Chicago, Nairobi and across the world, and the power of coffee to bring people together is quite understated. Kikwetu serves as a reminder of this power.”
Launching Sunday, Oct. 27, Kikwetu will host a special weekly pop-up at Silver Room (1506 E. 53rd St.) giving guests a chance to taste the company’s drinks made from coffee grown in the volcanic soils of Kenya’s highlands. The first 20 guests will receive a complimentary “mandazi” pastry made from Omollo’s special family recipe, and coffee beans will be available for purchase.
Visitors to the pop-up can also be among the first to sign up for Kikwetu's new subscription service. Subscribers can select their coffee type, preferred grind and desired delivery frequency. Kikwetu will then roast and automatically deliver the coffee to their doorstep, with free shipping included.
