Executive Chef Daniel Weiland, who joined Recess and the adjacent event venue City Hall in late 2019, has broadened the menu of backyard American fare, adding main dishes and other casual twists.
Weiland created a new section of mains on the Recess dinner menu. New dishes include P.E.I Mussels with chorizo, chickpeas, fennel, cream and Greek yogurt flatbread; Grilled Skirt Steak with garlic herb butter and smashed potatoes; and two types of Double Crust Amish Pot Pie to accommodate both parties, carnivores and herbivores, with either chicken or mushroom.
Weiland has created a rotating weekly burger for $16—available for just $10 on Wednesdays. His burger specials have included the ‘Oh, You Fancy’, a double patty with porcini, Swiss cheese, truffle aioli, mushroom duxelles and kale puree on a brioche bun and the ‘ResolutionBurger’ with Havarti, guacamole, grilled onions, giardiniera and lemon-garlic vinaigrette. The weekly burgers are announced through the restaurant’s Instagram.
Playtime for adults ramps up throughout the week with daily specials including the Parking Ticket Tuesday - where guests can bring in a recent parking ticket and be entered to win the amount of their ticket - Burger Wednesdays and Thursday night trivia starting at 7pm. Friday and Saturday evenings are filled with free live music from a rotating mix of local bands, cover bands and DJ sets. Performances start at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. on both nights.
Additionally, Recess is kicking off the weekend with a newly launched brunch every Saturday and Sunday with a variety of boozy specials, including the popular Bleeding Heart Mimosa, a bottomless special for $20 a person. The signature Bi-Partisan Bloody Mary unites both sides of the aisle, so to speak, featuring a vegan mix topped with a fontina-stuffed peppadew pepper, pig in a blanket, Italian salami, smoked Gouda and two types of pickles. The Crook County Cocoa includes your choice of Stolen overproof rum, Baileys Irish cream or Tincup whiskey. It’s topped with whipped cream, birthday cake sprinkles, a glazed doughnut hole, double chocolate cookie and rainbow marshmallows.
Brunch is available Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 838 W. Kinzie Street. Dinner is served Tuesday through Friday starting at 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday starting at 3 p.m.
