Fractional Spirits, a new brand focused on maximizing the use of seasonal ingredients from local growers and minimizing waste, has announced the launch of Amaro da Verde. Founded in 2023, Fractional Spirits is a collaboration between Co-Op Sauce, a Chicago-based sauce company and fermentation specialist, and 18th Street Distillery, Indiana’s first Black-owned distillery.

Amaro da Verde is red in the bottle, turns antique gold over ice, and appears green on the palate. The amaro features freshly macerated rhubarb and blood orange, lemon verbena, mint, and a selection of bitter herbs and roots. It is produced in small batches without added sugar, with a flavor profile reminiscent of Chartreuse and other alpine spirits, despite being crafted in the American Midwest. The grain spirit is infused and aged with these aromatic ingredients, then filtered, proofed to 42.5% ABV (85 proof) using mint tea, and bottled by hand.

Fractional Spirits’ first product, Fernet Fungo, was awarded a bronze medal in the herbal/botanical/spice liqueur category at the American Distilling Institute’s 2024 International Spirits Competition. The company distills and infuses its spirits by hand at its facility in Hammond, Indiana.

Mike Bancroft, cofounder of Fractional Spirits, described Amaro da Verde as offering a smoky, herbal sweetness with a bitter-minty finish. He noted its versatility for both straight consumption over ice and in cocktails such as the Last Word and Greenpoint.

Amaro da Verde will be featured at several tasting events. It will be served at the Reader’s Monday Night Foodbowl at Frank and Mary’s Tavern, 2905 N. Elston Ave., on Monday, September 23, starting at 6 p.m. The event will include a kegged “Second to Last Word” cocktail and a food menu featuring a Beefy Cheesy sandwich, a Wisconsin wildcat sandwich, smashed cucumber salad, and a vegan bacon BLT.

Fractional Spirits will also have a booth at the Indie Spirits Expo on Tuesday, September 24, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. at the Hilton, 720 S. Michigan Ave. Additionally, Sauce and Bread Kitchen, 6338 N. Clark St., will showcase Amaro da Verde at the first event of its 2024-25 Saturday Supper series on Saturday, October 5, at 7 p.m. The event will include a five-course meal with green-inspired dishes and wine and spirit pairings.
