The Fifty/50 Restaurant Group – amid the dine-in government mandated shutdown in the wake of COVID-19 – is cooking and serving 400 daily no-contact pickups of pre-packaged meals to all furloughed and laid off workers in need starting this Wednesday.
Any furloughed or laid off worker – from restaurants, hotels, salons, retail, etc. – are welcome to a free meal, and nobody in need will be turned away. Pickups will be available from 4pm to 6:30pm Tuesdays thru Sundays at The Fifty/50 sports bar at 2047 W. Division St. in Wicker Park starting this Wednesday (March 25).
The free food offerings rotate daily. The weekly menu is below.
Twelve years ago last week, The Fifty/50 Restaurant Group co-founders Scott Weiner and Greg Mohr opened their first restaurant – an upscale sports bar called The Fifty/50 in Wicker Park. Scott and Greg wanted to donate the free meals for industry workers out of their first restaurant that’s centrally located to where an abundance of hospitality workers live.
"It's a hard time for everyone in our neighborhoods and in the service industry,” Weiner said. “We're fortunate to have an anonymous Chicago tech CEO who is able to provide us with funds to support this industry food drive, and help put some of our people back on payroll at The Fifty/50 to cook and serve this food. We've always worked hard to be great corporate partners in the communities that support our establishments. All of the food that we are serving is being purchased from local Chicago food distributors who are suffering right there alongside of us.”
The Fifty/50 asks the following for those picking up the free meals: Please don’t take more food than you need, please bring your own grocery bag if you can, and please be patient and kind waiting in line. Strict social distancing rules will be in place for those waiting in line. Cones will be placed to mark standing spaces.
