Chicago Market, a local, sustainable co-op grocery store opening in Uptown, is hosting the first Up & Under Fest on Saturday, September 15 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the WILSON UNDERLINE in the Uptown neighborhood. An expansion of Chicago Market’s popular “Co-op Pop-Up” series, the community festival will feature market prepared foods, live bands, kids activities, health & wellness partners, Uptown and Chicago-area businesses, and more.
Held at the WILSON UNDERLINE, a reclaimed space below the Wilson redline station tracks at the intersection of Wilson and Broadway, Up & Under Fest brings together Uptown community partners Uptown United, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), and Uptown SSA #34 to highlight the rising neighborhood’s upcoming Chicago Market and WILSON UNDERLINE additions. The event is free to attend with a $10 suggested gate donation to benefit Chicago Market and Wilson Underline programming.
“Chicago Market and WILSON UNDERLINE are both community-born organizations with a vision to serve their neighbors and cultivate local partnerships and programming,” said Gregory Berlowitz, Chicago Market’s Founder and Board Member. “With such closely aligned missions and neighboring proximity, Chicago Market is excited to help launch the first activation of the WILSON UNDERLINE space.”
Up & Under Fest will showcase a sampling of local farmers, producers and dishes that highlight the sustainable, delicious products that Chicago Market will offer once the co-op grocery is open including:
C&D Family Farms - meat, poultry, eggs
City Farms - sustainable urban agriculture
Uptown Donuts - local donut destination
Demera - Ethiopian restaurant
Pecking Order - Filipino chicken
and unique kids activities, local health & wellness partners, and Uptown favorites including:
Shedd Aquarium - scientists, animal care, conservationists and educators
Yoga Body Elements - boutique yoga and spa studio
Thorek Hospital & Medical Center - not-for-profit, acute care facility
Chicago Market announced its future retail location at the Gerber Building in the former Uptown Wilson CTA Station this past May, after being selected by the CTA during an RFP process. Owned by the community and democratically run, Chicago Market offers a unique alternative shopping experience where the customer can be a part of the store.
“The community support has been incredible and we are very excited to give people the opportunity to learn more about Chicago Market’s future location across the street from the WILSON UNDERLINE,” said Grant Kessler, Chicago Market Board president. “The community co-op has over 1,300 Owners and aims to reach 2,000 by the end of 2018 to help fund the store build-out, a true community effort.”
Up & Under Fest is the latest event in Chicago Market's Co-op Pop-Up series, a series of events and informational sessions to give potential Owners and customers a first look at its vision for a local, sustainable grocery shopping experience.
