Chicago beer hall, Funkenhausen, is back in action starting March 3, after taking a winter break since the last indoor dining shutdown in November. The West Town restaurant is an homage to Chef/Owner Mark Steuer’s German heritage and Charleston, South Carolina upbringing. The reopening menu is split between Steuer’s creative riffs on those German and Southern cuisines.

On the ‘German-ish’ side, you’ll find Mussels made with haus Pilsner, Bratwurst served with Brussels sprouts and sweet mustard, a Pretzel with white BBQ sauce and pimento cheese—a nod to the Southern side—and the German version of mac & cheese, Kasespaetzle. Three varieties of Schnitzel include a milk-brined pork loin served with lemon and gribiche, pickle-brined chicken breast with fermented hot sauce, and a Skate Wing.

‘Southern-ish’ dishes include new items such as Deviled Eggs with crispy ham and caviar and Little Biscuits with jalapeno butter and honey. And Steuer’s smoked Spare Ribs are made with a secret dry rub recipe and served with white BBQ sauce, the herb-crusted Slagel Ribeye and Half Chicken served with braised greens and potlikker jus.

No self-proclaimed beer hall would be complete without a beer list, of which Funkenhausen serves up pints, beer boots and growlers. Choose from German varities such as Ayinger, Hofbrau or Krombacher, or opt for their exclusive in-house brew made by 18th Street Brewery, Schnitzengiggle. The wine list curated by Beverage Director and General Manager Joseph Carnahan focuses on affordable and under-the-radar beers from the world’s German-speaking regions, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Alsace as well as parts of Northern Italy, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Funkenhausen’s weekend brunch will be added in the coming weeks, as well as a sidewalk patio once the weather allows.

Hours are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday. Takeout and delivery are available through ChowNow and reservations can be made through OpenTable. Funkenhausen is located at 1709 W. Chicago Ave. in West Town.
