Boxcar Betty’s, the Charleston fried chicken sandwich joint is opening a new restaurant in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood January 15. Located at 1856 W. North Ave, this location marks its second in Chicago, following its first within Ogilvie Transportation Center that opened in 2018.
Boxcar Betty’s Chicago introduction came from a Chicago resident with Charleston roots, Abbott Smith, a former Potbelly Sandwich Shop executive. Smith’s eye for fast casuals discovered Boxcar Betty’s on several visits to his family home in Charleston. Soon after, he connected with Boxcar’s founders, Roth Scott and Ian MacBryde, to bring a taste of southern hospitality to Chicago.
“Bucktown is a fantastic location that mirrors the Boxcar personality — quirky and trendy, while also family-friendly,” remarks Smith. “We’re viewing this new location as our flagship and home base in Chicago. We can’t wait to be a part of the vibrant neighborhood and community here.”
Boxcar Betty’s opens this Friday for curbside takeout and delivery. Located in the former Lillie Q’s space, they added a new pick-up window to the storefront, allowing for contactless order pick-up for guests and delivery drivers. In the coming months, a patio will be available for outdoor seating, as well as indoor dining once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.
The signature Boxcar sandwich layers a brined fried chicken breast with pimiento cheese, peach coleslaw, housemade pickles and spicy mayo. Fried green tomatoes, fried pickles and sweet potato fries are among the half-dozen sides.
Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Boxcar Betty’s is available for pick-up and delivery online via its website, as well as DoorDash, GrubHub, UberEats and Postmates.
