Bitter Pops announces the launch of its Regional Hot Dog Program, the latest culinary adventure from the Bitter Pops Kitchen. Following the Regional Burgers in year one and Regional Sandwiches in year two, year three will bring a taste of regional masterpieces from across the country, beginning with the Michigan Coney Dog.

The Michigan Coney Dog: A Taste of Detroit

Kicking off this year’s Regional Hot Dog Program is a tribute to Detroit’s Michigan Coney Dog.

Gust Keros was a Greek immigrant who opened American Coney Island on West Lafayette Street in downtown Detroit in 1917. Gust’s brother, Bill Keros, joined him later, opening Lafayette Coney Island next door, sparking a sibling rivalry. While both restaurants serve up Coney Dogs, they differ slightly in their approach: American Coney Island is known for its spicier homemade chili, while Lafayette Coney Island offers a meatier, family-recipe chili.

Today, more than 100 years later, both restaurants continue to operate, with American Coney Island remaining family-owned and Lafayette Coney Island now run by its long-time employees.

The Build: A Classic with a BP Twist

Bitter Pops will bring the Michigan Coney Dog to Chicago, complete with a few signature twists. The BP version starts with a 7-inch Vienna Beef, all-beef, natural casing hot dog, nestled in a fresh Turano hot dog bun. It’s then topped with a house-made traditional Michigan Coney meat sauce, a squiggle of yellow mustard, and diced white onion. And, of course, no good hot dog is complete without a side of fries—at Bitter Pops, they’re included in the price.
