As breweries, bars, and taprooms look for ways to diversify, this summer at District Brew Yards, both Casa Humilde Cervecería and Burnt City Brewing have dipped a toe into the alternative beverages sphere.

Casa Humilde sought out a beverage collaboration with a fellow Chicago-based, Mexican-American-run company Big Mich, which makes small-batch craft michelada mix, to create Pa' La Casa, a 4.7% ABV tamarindo michelada built on a Belgian-style beer base. In just a single weekend in July, Casa Humilde sold out of the first 15 BBL batch of Pa' La Casa—so the brewery plans to drop a 90 BBL batch this Friday, August 28. While the majority of the second run will be distributed to local retailers and liquor stores, Pa' La Casa will also be at District Brew Yards on draft in the beer hall and in 4-pack cans in the shop.

"Pa' La Casa is what a michelada should be: a celebration of exceptional products for the culture," Co-Founder/Brewer José Lopez explains. "The beer is Belgian-inspired. It adds more complexity than a lager would in a michelada."

At Burnt City Brewing, Head Brewer Ben Saller moved forward with creating a hard soda. Burnt City introduced its first hard soda featuring real mango and key lime juices with turbinado sugar in July. Clocking in at 5% ABV, Burnt City added the beverage to its tap wall last month. Plans to make another hard soda (available in the beer hall only) are already in the works, according to Saller.
