La Luna (1726 S. Racine) owner Samantha Sanchez is working alongside Alderman Byron Sigcho Lopez and Benito Juarez Community Academy, to bring a Thanksgiving feast to Pilsen. Sanchez’ father, Sam Sanchez has been a long-time restauranteur and community servant who has been serving free meals to hundreds of senior citizens each year in the 43rd and 44th ward. Sanchez wishes to bring a part of this yearly tradition to Pilsen. The free meal will serve seniors and the community of the 25th ward. Food will be donated by La Luna and served by students of Benito Juarez as well as Pilsen community members and the Alderman’s office.
According to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, food insecurity affects one in seven people living in Cook County. Faces vary among, veterans, people with disabilities, the working poor, children, and others. In an effort to celebrate community, family, and the holidays, these groups are coming together to provide a warm homemade meal for the neighborhood.
The Thanksgiving feast is open to the public and anyone in need of a good meal. Those looking to get involved may contact Edith Vargas at edith.vargas@25thward.org or Diego Morales at diego.morales@25thward.org for volunteer opportunities as helpers are still needed in the kitchen for this weekend’s meal.
Meals will be served at Benito Juarez Community Academy (1510 W. Cermak) from 10AM-2PM this Saturday, November 23rd.
